How Much Does Social Media Video Content Cost for a Contractor in Pittsburgh?

By Josh Veon  ·  Orchard Eight Media  ·  Cranberry Township, PA

If you've been thinking about hiring someone to handle video content for your contracting business, the first question is usually the same: what's this actually going to cost me? Here's a straight answer.

Most contractors I talk to in the Pittsburgh area have looked into video content at some point and either got a vague proposal, a price that felt way too high, or both. So I'm going to lay out exactly how I price this work, what you get at each level, and what actually makes a difference in whether it works for your business.

No fluff, no "it depends" without explanation. Just the numbers and what's behind them.

Why contractors are investing in video content right now

Before we get into pricing, it's worth saying quickly why this is even a conversation. The roofing companies, landscapers, painters, and custom builders doing well on social media right now aren't running ads — they're showing up consistently with short videos that show their work, their crew, and their process.

That kind of content builds trust faster than any website or review ever could. A homeowner scrolling Instagram who sees your crew wrapping a roof in a clean 30-second reel has already started trusting you before they ever call. That's the value.

The challenge is that filming, editing, and posting consistently takes time most owner-operators don't have. That's where a monthly retainer comes in.

What a monthly video content retainer actually includes

A retainer means I show up at your job site on a scheduled basis, capture what's happening, and deliver finished, edited videos ready to post. You're not buying a one-time video — you're buying consistent presence.

Here's how I structure it:

Starter

$1,999–$2,500 / month

Built for businesses that want to get started with consistent short-form content without a big commitment.

  • 1 on-site shoot day per month
  • 4–5 short-form videos (Reels, TikTok, Shorts)
  • Editing, captions, and delivery
  • Short-form only — no long-form video

Full Presence

$5,999–$6,500 / month

For businesses that want to dominate their local market and treat content as a core part of their growth strategy.

  • 3 on-site shoot days per month
  • 12 short-form videos per month
  • 2 long-form videos per month
  • Full content library built over time

All tiers include on-site filming at your location — I come to your job site or shop, not the other way around. Deliverables are fully edited and ready to post, formatted for whichever platforms you're using.

What moves the price up or down

A few things affect where you land within those ranges:

Location and travel

I'm based in Cranberry Township, so businesses in the northern Pittsburgh suburbs — Mars, Wexford, Butler County, North Hills — are straightforward. If your jobs are regularly in the South Hills or further out, that factors into scheduling and pricing.

Complexity of the work being filmed

Filming a landscaping crew doing a mulch install is pretty straightforward. Filming a custom home build with multiple subcontractors across a large site takes more coordination. More complex shoots take more time on site, which affects the overall cost.

Platform requirements

If you just need Instagram Reels and Facebook, that's clean and efficient. If you need content formatted for five different platforms with different specs and captions for each, that's more post-production time.

Is a retainer worth it for a contractor?

Here's the honest answer: it depends on whether you're willing to actually use the content.

The contractors who get the most out of this are the ones who post consistently, engage with comments, and treat social media like a real part of their business — not a box to check. If you hire someone to make videos and then post them once a month without captions, it won't move the needle.

But if you're willing to show up on social the same way you show up on job sites — consistently and professionally — video content is one of the highest-ROI marketing investments a local contractor can make right now. Your competitors mostly aren't doing it well. That gap won't last forever.

What's not included

To keep things transparent: retainers cover production and editing, not social media management. I'm not logging into your accounts and posting for you unless that's specifically added to the scope. Most clients handle their own posting — I deliver the finished files and you publish them.

Ad spend, boosting posts, and paid social strategy are also separate. If you want to run ads using the content we produce, that's absolutely a good idea — I just don't manage ad accounts as part of a standard retainer.

How to figure out which tier makes sense

If you're just getting started with video and want to test whether it works for your business before committing to a bigger investment, the Starter tier is the right call. Four to five polished short-form videos a month is enough to build a real presence over time.

If you're already somewhat active on social and want to level up with more volume and the ability to show off full project walkthroughs or customer testimonials, the Growth tier is where most established businesses land.

The Full Presence tier is for businesses treating content as a primary growth channel — typically companies with a strong base who want to be the most visible contractor in their market.
